DataArt, a global software engineering firm, today announced the upcoming spring edition of its international blitz programming competition, Proggy-Buggy, set to take place on May 25, 2025. The event is themed “Towel Contest 2025” in celebration of Towel Day — a tribute to Douglas Adams and his iconic sci-fi novel The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
Proggy-Buggy is a fast-paced, algorithmic programming contest where participants are challenged to solve 13 tasks in 42 minutes – a playful nod to Adams’ famous “Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything.”
All tasks are in English and require participants to submit console applications written in one of several supported programming languages, including C, C++, Java, C#, Python, Ruby, PHP, and JavaScript, among others. Code is submitted to a central server for automated evaluation.
The competition is held entirely online and is open to participants of all ages, genders, and nationalities. Participation is free of charge but requires prior registration. Contestants must submit their solutions from a single device and are prohibited from using external online resources, including search engines and AI tools such as ChatGPT.
Participants compete in three experience-based categories:
- Amateurs – Entrants aged 16+ who have participated in programming contests, but not at an international level.
- Professionals – Competitors in national school or university-level programming olympiads, excluding finalists or winners.
Superheroes – Finalists or winners of national/international olympiads or previous Proggy-Buggy champions.
Winners will be determined based on the number of tasks solved and the fewest penalty points accrued. Special awards will also be given in the following categories:
- First correct answer to a solvable task
- First confirmed solution stating a task has no valid answer
- Lowest total penalty score among all participants
- All registered contestants who take part will receive a certificate of participation.
The event will begin at 13:00 Bulgarian time on Sunday, May 25. Each registered participant will receive a secure access link prior to the contest.
Proggy-Buggy was first launched in 2014 by DataArt’s internal engineering teams. Since then, it has attracted more than 10,000 participants from over 60 countries.
